Meet the Publican: Caleigh

Caleigh, our Director of Strategy, is a long time Publican with no shortage of talent, intelligence, and you guessed it, strategies. We dove a little deeper to see what really makes Caleigh tick:

1. What are you reading right now?

A Norwegian detective series by Jo Nesbo.

2. Where’s your favourite place?

Our family cottage – though it’s small it’s always overflowing with my favourite people, dogs, wine, trees, sunshine and swimming.

3. If you were a dog, what kind would you be?

How to choose?! I’ve had a lot of dogs in my life (9 plus a litter of puppies) and all breeds have different and awesome qualities. My best friend is a vet technician and she says Cairn Terrier – coincidently the breed of my first dog, Boomer – which she describes as “loyal, smart, strong and little” (thanks Ren).

4. Which Harry Potter house would you be placed in?

I also phoned a friend on this one since there was no possible way to be objective / not reveal too much of my HP nerdiness. It’s a toss up between Gryffindor and Ravenclaw but since I have to pick one, I’ll go Ravenclaw. I’m a little more bookish than brave.

5. What social impact issue means a lot to you?

I studied primatology in school so I’m a passionate about all things related to our closest living relatives (and animals in general – nothing makes me cry harder than a polar bear video). An issue particularly close to my heart is the environmental degradation caused by palm oil plantations. Though palm oil is cultivated in many countries, it has severely destabilized ecosystems in Borneo and Sumatra – home to the two species of Orangutans, now both classified as critically endangered. The good-ish news is that companies are facing increased pressured to purchase palm oil certified by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO – an imperfect system but a system nonetheless). As consumers, we can help by purchasing products without palm oil or supporting companies that are making an active effort to use only RSPO-certified oil.
