Meet the Publican: Na’Shantea

Na’Shantea always has a smile on her face. We sat down with our new Client and Research Specialist to find out first-hand what’s behind that smile and why she loves being a Publican.

1. What’s something weird about you?

I have a Heinz ketchup problem. I eat too much of it. I’ve joked that I love it so much that I can drink it. Although I wouldn’t really drink it but it’s still a problem. When I buy fries, I layer each one with ketchup before eating it. With all the sugar and preservatives in ketchup, one of my New Year’s resolutions was actually to reduce my ketchup consumption! That’s how weird I am… have you ever heard of that new year’s resolution before?

2. What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

I really appreciate getting people’s perspectives on things so I have a long list of some of the best advice I’ve received – too many to choose from to be honest. Although I couldn’t tell you the best advice I’ve received, I can share a memorable piece of advice that I got in the least expected way. While an episode from the T.V. series Once Upon a Time, the Evil Queen from Snow White said to Ariel from the Little Mermaid, “The only thing worse than rejection is not knowing”. This line stuck with me and has encouraged me to take more chances because I’ve realized that asking myself “what if” is worse than rejection.

3. If you were a tea, which one would you be and why?

I just want to preface my answer by saying that I LOVE tea. However, not just any tea – I would pick herbal tea over fruity tea any day. If I were a tea, I would be the tea that I love to drink the most – honey ginger tea! It’s sweet, spicy, and good for my sinuses. Peppermint tea is a close second.

4. What social impact issue means a lot to you?

Social impact is about making a positive change in society. We can all play a role in social impact – no matter how big or how small. From volunteering at a local food bank to financing a national mentoring program, social impact is driven by individual and collective actions. I get excited when I think about the immense opportunity that businesses have to drive positive change because of their financial power. That’s why I work at PUBLIC.

5. What’s your favourite thing about working at PUBLIC?

I still have a lot to learn about PUBLIC, but my favourite part so far is the community. Birthday cake cuttings and Publican value shout outs are just a few ways that people are celebrated, appreciated, and included. I’ve learned that who you work with is often more important than what you do. You can have the best job in the world, but that doesn’t matter as much if you are in an unwelcoming and unsupportive environment. I am grateful to have an interesting job and an awesome team who are passionate about making a positive difference in the world!
