Childhood literacy is a key indicator of future success. And because provincial governments are not providing schools with the library funding they need, literacy is at risk. Thankfully, Indigo has stepped up year after year (to the tune of $19.5 million to over 2,000 school libraries so far) with their Love of Reading Foundation. We partnered with Indigo to educate Canadians on the issue.
Elevate and celebrate. We wanted to draw attention to the important work that the Love of Reading Foundation had done over a decade while showcasing how the Foundation is continuing to inspire young Canadians. Along with our partners at Indigo, we decided to enhance school library experiences across Canada by crowdsourcing the Top 10 books and then providing those books to selected schools. To promote the Top Ten, we utilized online video, social media and in-store POS at Indigo stores.
Over 50,000 votes were cast over a 4-week time period and 200 high-need elementary school libraries received collections of the winning set of books. The program also raised awareness of the literacy issue in Canada while celebrating the important work that the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation has done over the past decade.
